About Ware
We make custom ceramic glazes to order. You pick the color — we turn it into a real, tested recipe and ship it to your studio.
Where This Started
Ware grew out of decades of glaze research at a working ceramics studio. Thousands of test tiles. Hundreds of formulations. Years of careful documentation — every firing logged, every result recorded.
We kept hearing the same thing from potters: “I know the color I want, but I can’t find a glaze that matches.” Commercial glazes come in limited palettes. Mixing your own means months of testing. Most makers just settle for whatever’s close enough.
We thought that was a problem worth solving. So we built Ware — a way to start with the color in your head and end with a batch of glaze in your hands.
Meet the Founders
Ware is built by Matt and Rose Katz, the founders of Ceramic Materials Workshop. Between them they bring over 40 years of ceramic materials experience — in the studio, in the lab, and in the classroom.
Matt Katz
Matt is a working ceramic artist with a B.F.A. from Alfred University and an M.F.A. from the University of Colorado–Boulder. He spent over 20 years as a ceramic engineer and researcher, including 15 years teaching ceramic materials for artists at Alfred. He has a gift for making ceramic science understandable for makers of all experience levels — and that same approach drives everything at Ware.
Rose Katz
Rose is a clay and glaze engineer with a B.F.A. from Alfred University and over 10 years in the tile industry before CMW. She’s also an independent artist and production potter. Rose’s combination of industry engineering and hands-on maker experience is rare — and it’s a big part of why our formulations actually work in real studios, not just on paper.
They work out of their studio in New England, where the ceramic chemistry behind Ware continues to evolve with every firing.
